Violence across territories in Colombia continues to directly target and kill social leaders and human rights leaders. While male leaders are killed and targeted at higher rates when compared to women leaders, the types of violence women experience are unique. Women leaders receive threats of sexual violence and derogatory gendered comments that question their right to participate in public life . Traditionalist worldviews on gender and gendered stereotypes have directly impacted women’s experiences in armed conflict and war. This panel aims to discuss the differential gendered impact women leaders face and highlight the discriminatory gendered mentalities that influence armed actors.
Join us to hear from Dr. Kiran Stallone and Dr Julia Zulver about their recent findings in their article “The Gendered Risks of Social Leadership in Contexts Governed by Armed Groups: Evidence from Colombia“, and their insight and analysis on related themes. We will dive into their findings from interviewing men and women leaders who organize around a variety of topics such as Afro-Colombians, land rights, gender-based violence, youth rights, environmental protections, Indigenous rights, migrant rights, rights of victims of armed conflict violence, and others.
